It's not just how many hits you get! Hits just tells your service provider how much workload your site imposes on their servers. You'll want to track visits. You need to know how your site was found including the keywords that were used in which search engine to find your site. Then you'll want to know how your site is being used. Which pages are popular? Do people come back for a second visit?

If you are selling on the site there is more to track. Key events inside your site also deserve attention. Track sales. See which of your products is generating interest. Identify problems. Try to understand why shoppers abandon their sessions. Is it price? Or did they decide not to use a credit card on your site for some reason?
